Rather than a crude depiction, the artisan was able to capture and convey the scales and texture of the mythical creature. The dark shadowing of the natural cinnabar can be seen in photos below. A total of twenty-seven 12-14mm hand polished and shaped genuine turquoise beads comprise this choker length necklace. The clasp is marked gold-filled. The angle of the spacers make if difficult to test for gold content however they are at the very least gold-filled as well. This would be considered a 14" choker. Very nice and weighty piece of vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Jewelry! The centerpiece of this 1940's necklace is a deity mask carved from obsidian stone. Plenty of similarly designed pieces were likely put out by various artisans from Mexico City and the famed Taxco region, but no two are exactly alike ~ that's the real beauty of these very collectible vintage Mexican sterling handmade works of art.
